Generative AI's Impact on Legal Education and the Profession

Introduction
Generative AI (GenAI) will transform the legal profession. Applications include the generation of legal documents and document summarization and analysis, among others. This transformation has the potential to revolutionize legal education and the practice of law. Further, large language models may avail underserved populations with improved access to legal aid.

In this presentation, I will discuss our research (currently ongoing) into the impact of GenAI on legal education and the profession. I will begin by outlining the ways that GenAI can increase lawyer productivity, as well as address concerns about the accuracy and reliability of AI-generated documents and analyses. I will then discuss the research methods that we used to study this problem and the results of our research. Finally, the ethical implications and risks associated with self-serve lawbots will also be addressed.

Methods
Our research included surveying deans at every law school in the U.S. as well as analyzing each school’s course offerings. We will also be interviewing many legal professionals about their views on the potential impact of GenAI. In addition, we will be building and testing a language model to assist individuals in need of legal assistance that cannot afford a lawyer.

Results/Discussion
Our research is ongoing, but we believe it will lead to law schools incorporating GenAI technology into their curriculum, providing practitioners with a road map to implement GenAI, as well as leading to the development of an accurate, easy-to-use lawbot.

This lawbot can be used to, among other things:
• Automate the drafting of legal documents, such as contracts, wills, and pleadings.
• Generate legal research, such as case briefs and memoranda.
• Analyze legal data, such as case law and statutes.

Conclusion
Despite these challenges, the potential benefits of GenAI outweigh the risks. GenAI has the potential to make legal education and practice more efficient, effective, and accessible.
