The Data Science by Design collective has self-published two anthologies of creative, data-inspired, and data-informed art and written work. The goals of these anthologies are to broaden the idea of what data is and what “doing” data science means.
The Data Science by Design collective has self-published two anthologies of creative, data-inspired, and data-informed art and written work. The goals of these anthologies are to broaden the idea of what data is and what “doing” data science means and helping more people find their place in data science. In this session, we will showcase some of the work in these anthologies and then facilitate a discussion on how we as a data science community can create more opportunities for others to engage with data work and exercise their creativity in the process. For example: how can we support others in data-related passion projects and elevate unheard voices in our community, as educators how might we allow for non-traditional products to be submitted for assignments, and as data practitioners, how might we engage with new communities by experimenting with form when telling the stories of our work? We will conclude the session with a short, hands-on activity that will provide activation energy for participants’ own projects.
